The Modern Sailor

"I AM A SAILOR"

3 REASONS 3 STRIPES

REASON/STRIPE 1

1. The Sailor/Naval uniform is to Me - aTrinbagonian Rasta, what the Khaki Suit is to Jamaican Rastas.

Rastas emulate the dress code of HIM Selassie in his attire as Field Marshal of theEthiopian Army (the khaki field suit)

As a Trinbagonian Rasta I identify more culturally with the militancy of the white Navy Admiral uniform which HIM Selassie also wore. It is a bridge that unites two of my selves - my Rasta self and my Trinbagonian culture self.

REASON/STRIPE 2

2. It unites my fashion affinity for Adidas (the brandwith 3 stripes) with the fashion versatility of the seaman/petty officer uniform

. I was originally drawn to Adidas because Bob Marley and other foundation Rastas wore it. Now I wear the brand because I am aware of Adidas's long history of supporting black athletes and entertainers, (including athletes from the Caribbean and artists from the Rastafari movement) and as a dominant brand they are doing their part in minimizing global plastic waste

The three stripes have come to bear more meaning for me personally also;

3 - Haile Selassie - power of the Trinity

3 - the three mountains peaks of the northern range

that gave this island its name, "La Trinity = Trinidad"

3 - my three lifestyle pillars = God, Family, Culture.

REASON/STRIPE 3

3. The Sailor's reputation is idiosyncratic to my personality. I can have militant discipline but I can also be given to drunken pleasure.

I am my best self when I find the balance between the two.

Favorite quote: "Drunk or sober know your place."
